Sisyphus
I wondered whether I could create a figure in my own style, without arms, engaged in an activity that seemingly requires them. I chose Sisyphus, whose fate is to push a boulder uphill again and again, and sought to portray him in my own way. The weight of fate is expressed by the mass of the boulder concentrated at the top of the sculpture. The movement of the figure counterbalances the tilted axis and conveys the effort to maintain balance under the burden. A shared patina unites the boulder and the figure: they appear almost fused into a single whole, in which a person is inseparably bound to his fate.
