Karel Loprais Pavilion

Frenštát pod Radhoštěm

The pavilion pays tribute to one of the best-known personalities of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. Instead of a traditional monument, the proposal creates a place where people can meet one another and, symbolically, Karel Loprais and his Tatra — to sit, talk, remember or take a photograph together.

The pavilion consists of two walls that remain transparent and airy. They are designed in 1 cm steel plate, with a portrait of Karel Loprais and his Tatra racing truck cut by an oxy-fuel torch. Traces of flame and small drops of molten metal preserve the material's raw character, giving the delicate imagery a robust, technical expression.

A single monumental oak slab serves as both bench and table. A truck tyre track is carved in relief into its surface. At night, integrated lighting accentuates the imagery in the steel walls and the raised concrete plinth.

The Outlaw

Frenštát pod Radhoštěm

Frenštát pod Radhoštěm is associated with many well-known personalities, so this proposal looks in another direction — towards the region's older history, legends and traditions. Written sources repeatedly mention herbalists and, above all, outlaws who once belonged to this landscape.

The intended passage between the town hall buildings resembles a small trade route leading from the town towards Radhošť. It also feels like a cave or hiding place where one can imagine an outlaw watching for merchants returning from market. The sculpture is therefore conceived specifically for this setting.

The Outlaw is a gentle giant with an affable character. At first glance he may look like a robber, but in truth he is a somewhat clumsy man caught off guard by life, who gradually became a good-natured guardian of the trade route and an adviser to merchants and travellers. The outlaw's club in his hand completes a figure whose true strength lies in kindness and a willingness to help.

The public could become part of the project, for example through a competition inviting pupils from local schools to give the outlaw a name and create a legend connected with him. The sculpture would thus gain a living story made by the people themselves.
